Hope, a young shy girl has always had a love for waitressing. Her aunt, Addie, took her at birth because Hope's mom didn't want her. Addie is one of the main cooks in the kitchen. Until Hope was 16, she stayed working at the same diner, but then it went out of business and closed. Soon afterwards, they found a diner in Wisconsin that needed help. When Addie and Hope arrived there they didn't quite feel comfortable. It wasn't the diner they were used to.
It just wasn't home.
The owner and manager of the restaurant, G.T. Stoop, is a very kind, generous, and humble man. Several months after Addie and Hope moved in, G.T. Stoop gets diagnosed with cancer. Just after G.T. Stoop becomes sick, he decides to run for mayor. He believes he has some changes that could make the town that they are living in better.
Everyone thinks this is an unwise idea. "Why should we vote for some man who is dying from cancer", the town says. A very rude, inconsiderate man named Eli Millstone is the other man running against G.T. Stoop. Most of the town loves Eli and votes for him.
G.T. Stoop's attitude through the hard and depressing times always stays positive and kind. He always has a smile on his face which makes his character very likable.
The author really describes the characters and what they're going through which makes it feel like they are real. I have read this book 2 times it is so good!
